GCSE Business is a brand new offering for The Gainsborough Academy and will enable students to understand the business world in some depth and allow them to make an informed decision about the path they wish to take be it in further study or out into the business world. GCSE Business is a good foundation should students who wish to pursue Business onto level 3 study and for those that would like to go straight into a career in the business world, this qualification will be helpful in such areas as banking, sales, product management or general management.


There is no course work or controlled assessment in GCSE Business and students will complete two exams at the end of the course (Y11). Both papers will be 1 hour 30 minutes long. These papers will be a mix of calculations, multiple choice, short answer questions and extended answer questions. Each exam is worth 50% of the overall grade.


In the first year students will cover a number of topics including Finance, Marketing, Enterprise and Putting Business Ideas into Practice, these topics are covered in more depth in the second year.


Students will be introduced to the entrepreneurial work and how to develop positive relationships with others. They will have to work in a team to meet the needs of customers from all different cultural backgrounds. Students will need to understand the moral, ethical and legal framework businesses have to operate in.

Students will need to understand the recruitment process for businesses and the restrictions put on this by legislation.


In Year 10 students will cover a wide range of topics that the homework will enable them to understand in more depth. They will be set homework that can either cement their learning of a particular topic or they will be introduced to a business concept in preparation for a new unit of work. Students will need to undergo tasks that will challenge them outside of the classroom and help them to evolve as potential future entrepreneurs and business leaders.
