Last week, TGA’s Y8 football team took part in a fantastic match. The game started off well with Gainsborough pressuring from the off set, and within the first five minutes they had chances to go 1-0 up. However, Branston broke quickly on a counter attack which saw them go 1-0. Gainsborough responded instantly with some lovely footwork by Ollie to get the game back level with a composed finish into the bottom corner. Gainsborough continued to be a threat and was constantly attacking the Branston half.
After some great team work in midfield the ball broke to Elliot on the right hand side of midfield, he delivered a magnificent cross which unfortunately could not be converted. The teams went into halftime with the game at 1-1, changes were made to continue to be an attacking threat. Soon into the second half, Gainsborough got a corner. A perfect delivery allowed Jared to head the ball into the back of the net to put Gainsborough 2-1 up. The boys played some lovely football, passing through the lines, using the width and the pace of the wingers to bring attack after attack. Without some excellent saves from the Branston goalkeeper, Gainsborough could have put the game to bed. A small defensive error saw Gainsborough on the back foot allowing Branston attack. An excellent defensive recovery run from Leo saw him put the ball out for a corner. Gainsborough defended the corner despite a big height difference but the ball broke to a Branston player on the edge of the box who hit a sweet shot into the bottom corner, bringing the game back level to 2-2.
Further changes were made bringing on Tom to lead the attack with pace. Gainsborough again were all over Branston with chance after chance. After a well built up attack the ball broke to Ollie again, who finished into the bottom corner taking Gainsborough into the lead. Chances were coming from all angles of the Gainsborough team with even a surprise shot from central defender Leo, with him narrowly missing over the bar. In the dying minutes of the game, Ollie was poised at the edge of the box when the ball broke to him. He hit the ball sweetly on the half volley but unfortunately the shot was not converted and the crossbar denied him of a hat trick. Up until the very last kick of the game Gainsborough were playing some exceptional football. The game finished 2-3 to Gainsborough, and Man of the Match was Ollie.
A great display of team football, and they go again next week with the final game of the season against an improved NK side. Well done boys!
