Recently, Y10 student Cody travelled to Warsaw, Poland, to compete in the prestigious G1 Polish Open. Fresh from his success in Germany the previous weekend, Cody was feeling confident and ready for the challenge ahead.
As the number 4 seed in his weight class, Cody received a bye in the first round and went straight into the Round of 16 against a familiar opponent from the German semi-finals. Cody knew he had to be at his best – and he was.
Round 1: Cody started strong, taking control of the centre of the ring and mixing body and head shots effectively. He dominated the round and won 9-3.
Round 2: This was a much closer contest, with both fighters trading points in an exciting back and forth. Cody used his reach brilliantly, picking off his opponent and securing a 15-12 victory. Winning 2-0 on rounds was a fantastic effort.
Next came the quarter-final against Spain.
Round 1: Cody was electric, setting a fast pace and taking the round 16-9.
Round 2: His opponent came back strong, levelling the match with a 14-2 win, setting up a decisive final round.
Round 3: It became a tactical battle, ending 4-4 and going to a tie-break. Unfortunately, Cody narrowly missed out, with the Spanish player winning on countback for unregistered hits.
Despite just missing out on a bronze medal, Cody has had an incredible two weekends of competition, facing some of the best fighters in Europe. Out of seven matches across both tournaments, he won five – an outstanding record at this level.
Thanks to his performance, Cody is set to climb an incredible 30 places in the October rankings – a huge achievement and a reflection of all his hard work and dedication!
