Recently, our enthusiastic Year 9 students had the exciting opportunity to experience live Spanish theatre, thanks to a performance by the acclaimed Onatti Theatre Company. The play, performed entirely in Spanish, was not only a linguistic experience but also a cultural one—aligning perfectly with the MFL Way.
The students were excellently behaved throughout the performance and demonstrated immense respect and interest in the cultures presented. They engaged brilliantly with the actor and actress, responding to interactive elements and showing great flexibility and creative thinking as they followed the plot, interpreted visual cues, and responded to humour in a foreign language.
This unique opportunity helped students build confidence in their communication skills and enhance their listening comprehension. Many were surprised at how much they understood, thanks to their hard work in developing vocabulary and memory skills in lessons. Watching a live performance allowed them to break down spoken Spanish in real time, applying strategies they’ve been working on in the classroom.
The visit not only deepened their grasp of Spanish but also helped them appreciate the power of live storytelling and the importance of cultural curiosity. The performance was a perfect demonstration of how we work on improving social and subject skills through language learning.
